How to be happy...
It’s the dream, right? To actually be happy at work. To feel excited when Monday rolls around, or at the very least, to not feel like doomsday has arrived.
Finding ways to be happy at work can feel like a losing battle, though, especially when you’re navigating a minefield of cranky co-workers, demanding supervisors, and the worst workplace villain of all: soul-crushing fluorescent lighting.
But don’t worry! We’ve got your back. Follow our top 5 tips for how to be happy work, and you’ll be navigating the workplace like a happiness-ninja in no time!
2. What are you looking forward to?
Admittedly, there are some tasks I dread...like sorting through my inbox. And while I doubt I’ll ever truly savor that task, I’ve found that attaching something I enjoy to the dreaded job makes it less unpleasant. I employed this sweet life-hack by subscribing to a newsletter that features new travel photos every day. So instead of dreading my inbox, the daily delivery of travel inspiration makes me excited to check my emails.
There are so many ways to put this sweet tip to work and shift your focus from the thing you dread to something you look forward to. If there’s a daily meeting you can’t stand, make it a habit to treat yourself to a yummy cup of coffee before it starts. Your brain will start looking forward to the comforting jolt of java instead of dreading the less-than riveting meeting that awaits. There’s always fun ways to build more bursts of joy and rewards into your day, so get creative!
3. Work your environment
Have you ever walked into a restaurant and instantly felt more calm or relaxed? There’s a reason for that. From lighting to furniture placement and color schemes, restaurants optimize every detail to create an inviting ambience that makes you want to settle in and relax (aka- stay longer and spend more).
And while your office may not have the budget to do a complete remodel, there are simple things you can do to create a happier environment in your personal workspace. From practical tactics, like decluttering your desk, to more creative ones, like adding a fun throw pillow to your desk chair, intentionally introduce things to your environment that make you smile. And, short of swapping out a chatty co-worker, swap out stress-inducers for stress-reducers. For me, replacing the invading army of sticky-notes and undone tasks with a fun, gold-framed whiteboard made my workspace a whole lot happier and more inviting.
4. Find the fun
“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” - Mary Poppins
That high-flying nanny really knew what she was talking about. When we look for it (or create it), we can find a spark of fun hidden in nearly every task. Kids are especially adept at this (I think that’s why they smile so much more than adults). Whether it’s playing tag while they wait in line or counting the number of red cars during a road trip, they make a game out of everything and have a lot more fun because of it.
While I’m not suggesting that we fill our offices with carnival games (even though that’d be pretty awesome), there are lots of little stealthy ways to add elements of fun to our daily work. If there’s a particularly grouchy customer, can you find a way to make them smile? Can you guess how many times the HR training video will use the word, “report”? How many emails can you knock out in the next five minutes? Can you beat that number tomorrow? I know it sounds silly, but those little moments of playfulness can add up to a significantly happier workday.
5. Give happy to get happy
Did you ever realize the happiest people you meet are also the ones who seem to share the most happiness? Turns out this is a foolproof approach for how to be happy...at work and in life.
At work, there are so many opportunities to share happiness. From a simple smile or encouraging word to a fun-filled dessert delivery to your office (yes, I’m talking about our Dessert of the Month Club), the sky’s the limit!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it...
